India’s political landscape witnessed dramatic developments on August 17, 2025, as the Election Commission of India (ECI) strongly cautioned against the spread of misinformation, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the INDIA bloc launched the ambitious “Vote Adhikar Yatra” in Bihar. These events are shaping the narrative ahead of the crucial Bihar Assembly Elections 2025 and fueling a national debate on voter rights, transparency, and electoral integrity.

Election Commission Flags “Deliberate Attempt” to Spread Misinformation

The Election Commission held a press briefing on Sunday, stating that a deliberate campaign of misinformation was being spread regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar stressed that:

  • The SIR process is fully transparent and in line with the Representation of the People Act.
  • Allegations of “vote theft” and “double voting” are not only misleading but also an insult to the Constitution.
  • Bihar’s voter list revision began on June 24 and was completed by July 20, following due legal procedure.

The Commission clarified that machine-readable voter lists are not allowed as per a 2019 Supreme Court ruling, but voters can still search their names online using EPIC numbers.

The ECI also issued a direct ultimatum to Rahul Gandhi, asking him to either provide proof via an affidavit within seven days for his “vote chori” claims, or issue a public apology. Failure to do so, the Commission warned, would label his allegations as baseless.

Rahul Gandhi Launches “Vote Adhikar Yatra” in Bihar

Defying the Election Commission’s stern warning, Rahul Gandhi kick-started the “Vote Adhikar Yatra” (Voter Rights March) in Sasaram, Bihar, accompanied by senior INDIA bloc leaders including Lalu Prasad Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, and CPI(ML) leader Dipankar Bhattacharya.

The yatra will:

  • Cover 1,300 kilometers across more than 20 districts in Bihar.
  • Last for 16 days, culminating in a grand rally at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan on September 1, 2025.
  • Focus on raising awareness about the right to vote, while highlighting alleged attempts to disenfranchise marginalized communities.

At the launch rally, Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP government of orchestrating a systematic voter deletion campaign, alleging that 65 lakh voters were removed in Bihar and over 1 crore names were added in Maharashtra. He reiterated that this was an “attack on democracy” and the “soul of the Constitution.”

Lalu Prasad Yadav Steals the Show at Sasaram Rally

While Rahul Gandhi emphasized voter rights, it was RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav who electrified the crowd with his trademark fiery speech and humor. Lalu:

  • Called the BJP “vote chor” (vote thieves).
  • Urged citizens to “remove the thieves and save democracy.”
  • Demanded an end to the 50% reservation cap, calling it an injustice to backward and marginalized communities.

His speech drew thunderous applause, with INDIA bloc leaders rallying behind him to show a united opposition front.

Political War of Words Escalates

The day saw sharp exchanges between the ECI and the opposition:

  • ECI’s Warning: Stop spreading misinformation; provide affidavit proof or apologize.
  • Rahul Gandhi’s Counter: The Commission is working to protect PM Modi and HM Amit Shah, instead of safeguarding democracy.
  • Opposition Unity: INDIA bloc leaders declared the yatra as a “battle to protect the Constitution and democracy.”

This showdown has not only intensified Bihar’s political battle but also raised questions about ECI’s impartiality ahead of the 2025 Assembly elections.

What It Means for Bihar Assembly Elections 2025

The simultaneous developments—the ECI’s strong stand and the INDIA bloc’s massive road campaign—underline how voter rights will dominate the Bihar election narrative.

  • For the Election Commission, the priority is to preserve credibility and trust in the electoral process.
  • For the INDIA bloc, the “Vote Adhikar Yatra” is an opportunity to mobilize the masses, especially marginalized groups who fear voter disenfranchisement.
  • For the BJP, this poses a challenge to counter the growing perception of “vote chori” and present a convincing defense.

Political observers note that this confrontation could reshape national politics, as Bihar is often seen as a bellwether state for larger electoral trends in India
